This is probably a spoiler, but since I don't actually have insider knowledge, I think I'm allowed. Officially, it's "speculation."

You are looking at the first crewman they're going to recruit.

As the last survivor of the would be pirates, with his prize crew already killed, he's going to give up the fight he's obviously losing in hopes of remaining alive.

And why would Sam and Hazel accept his surrender?

He's the one who can return control of the shipboard AI to them.

I think he's starting to realize that he's outclassed. Sam hasn't been the source of a known fatality (dog-dude may have his neck broken, but may also just be unconscious, since hit there on a human is something of an off-switch), and she's shown no hesitation of living up to the adage of "don't leave a live enemy behind you."

Tactics says that if you're in the weaker position, you don't mess about trying to take prisoners. You've got all you can do just trying to win. Sam and Hazel were outnumbered five-on-two, so they haven't been able to afford mercy yet.

Hazel is in more actual danger than Sam being smaller and less combat trained; Sam can afford to fight at least a little bit tactically, but she's fighting desperately.

Yeah, but she's winning. And as I'd said, she's taken "don't leave a live enemy behind you" to heart. And she has natural weaponry to make up for her "lack of skill."
